Thistle MultiFinish is a gypsum finish plaster supplied in a 25kg bag, used to apply a smooth skim coat over a variety of backgrounds. It is suitable for skimming plasterboard, bonding and undercoat plasters, and other backgrounds of differing suction, making it the most widely used finish plaster on both new work and refurbishment.

The reason MultiFinish is so popular is in the name. Most finish plasters are formulated for a particular background — one for plasterboard, another for a high-suction undercoat — and using the wrong one leads to cracking, poor adhesion, or plaster that goes off too quickly to work. MultiFinish handles mixed backgrounds, which on a real job is almost always the situation: a patched wall, plasterboard alongside old plaster, bonding over brickwork with boarded sections. One bag covers the lot, and that is why plasterers keep it as their default.

It gives a smooth, inert, high-quality surface ready for decoration, applied in two coats to a nominal 2mm thickness over plasterboard. Mix with clean water in a clean bucket, always adding plaster to water rather than the reverse, and use within the working time, as gypsum plaster sets chemically rather than by drying and cannot be revived once it has gone off. Backgrounds should be clean and free of dust, and highly absorbent surfaces may need controlling with a suitable primer or PVA to stop the plaster drying too fast to trowel up properly.
