Our Ornamental Garden Bark Blend is a decorative bark mulch supplied in a bulk bag, used to dress and protect planted areas. It is suitable for borders and flower beds, around shrubs, trees, and hedging, on woodland and naturalistic planting schemes, and as a surface for pathways and play areas across domestic and commercial gardens.

Bark does more than cover the ground. Spread over a bed, it suppresses weeds by blocking light from the soil beneath, retains moisture by slowing evaporation so plants need watering less often, and insulates roots against frost in winter and heat in summer. As it breaks down it feeds the soil and improves its structure, which is something no stone aggregate does — the trade-off being that bark needs topping up every couple of years as it decomposes, where gravel stays put indefinitely.

The blend gives a natural mix of bark sizes and warm brown tones that sits comfortably in planted areas, looking settled rather than newly laid. For weed suppression, spread to a depth of around 50mm to 75mm, as a thinner layer lets light through and weeds will come up. Keep it pulled back slightly from plant stems and tree trunks rather than piled against them, which can cause rot. Clear existing weeds before laying, and lay over a membrane in areas where you want maximum suppression and are not planting through.
