Our Graded Scaffold Boards are 3.9m softwood boards, 225mm wide and 36mm thick, supplied banded and ready for use. Primarily used as platform boards on scaffolding, they are equally popular for temporary site walkways and working platforms, trestle and hop-up staging, and increasingly for shelving, benches, tables, and garden furniture where a reclaimed industrial look is wanted.

Grading is what separates a scaffold board from any other plank of the same size. A graded board is selected against defined limits on knots, wane, grain slope, splits, and fissures, because a board carrying a working platform has to span between transoms with people and materials on it. Boards are typically banded at each end to stop them splitting along the grain in use, and 3.9m is the standard length, spanning the usual transom spacings on a scaffold.

At 36mm thick the board is substantial enough to carry load without excessive deflection, while remaining manageable to lift and position. The same qualities make it a favourite for furniture and shelving projects: it is wide, thick, straight, and considerably cheaper than buying planed hardwood of similar dimensions, and the sawn surface sands back well if a smoother finish is wanted. Boards should be stored flat and kept off the ground, and inspected for damage before each use where they are being used structurally.
