Product Description:

This box supplies 200 woodscrews at 4.0 x 16mm, a short screw with a slightly heavier gauge for light fixing work. It suits fitting hinges, catches, brackets, and ironmongery, fixing thin plywood, hardboard, and panel backs, attaching fittings to cabinets and furniture, and general repair work around the house and workshop.

At 16mm the screw is designed for fixing into thin material or for sitting entirely within a single thickness of timber, where anything longer would break through the far face of a door, drawer, or cabinet side. The 4.0mm diameter gives it more holding power than the equivalent 3.5mm at the same length, which matters with short screws, since there is little thread engaged and every extra bit of grip counts. It suits heavier hinges and fittings, and materials such as chipboard and MDF where a finer screw can strip out.

The screw is built around how it grips. A single thread cuts cleanly into the timber and compresses the fibres as it drives, giving good holding power despite the short length, while the countersunk head pulls flush into the surface of a hinge plate, bracket, or board, and the reinforced drive recess holds the bit securely with less cam-out. Pilot holes are worth drilling in hardwoods and close to edges, as the heavier gauge splits thin timber more readily than a 3.5mm screw would.
