Our Building Sand is a fine, soft sand supplied in a 25kg bag for general building and masonry work. It is mixed with cement, and lime where required, to make mortar for bricklaying and blocklaying, repointing, bedding copings and sills, and general repair work, and is equally suited to both domestic projects and trade use.

Building sand is known as soft sand because of its fine, rounded grains and lack of coarse particles. This gives mortar a smooth, plastic consistency that spreads easily on the trowel, holds its shape on the vertical face of a brick, and fills joints fully without voids. It is the correct sand for mortar work, whereas sharp sand, with its coarser, angular grains, is used for concrete, screeds, and paving bedding, where strength and drainage matter more than workability.

As a general guide, a mortar for most brickwork uses around four to five parts building sand to one part cement, with lime or a plasticiser added to improve workability, though the correct mix depends on the brick type and exposure of the wall. The 25kg bag is a manageable size for smaller jobs, repairs, and DIY projects where a bulk bag would be more than is needed, and keeps the sand clean and dry until use.
