Our A142 Steel Reinforcement Mesh is a welded steel fabric used to reinforce concrete and control cracking. It is the standard mesh for domestic concrete work including garage and shed bases, driveways, patios, pathways, ground floor slabs, and light foundation and raft work.

Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, which is why an unreinforced slab cracks as it settles, shrinks, or takes load across a span. Steel mesh takes that tension, holding the slab together and distributing load across the full area rather than letting it concentrate at a weak point. A142 is the lightest of the common A-series meshes and the usual specification for domestic slabs and non-structural bases, with heavier grades such as A193 and A252 used where loading or ground conditions demand more.

Each sheet measures 3.6m x 2.0m, covering 7.2m² and weighing approximately 16kg, which makes it manageable for two people to position on site. Mesh should be laid with sheets overlapping by at least one full square, supported clear of the ground on spacers so it sits within the slab rather than on the sub-base, and kept with adequate concrete cover to all edges to prevent corrosion. Sheets can be cut to size on site with bolt croppers or an angle grinder.
