Our 25 x 38mm Premium Grade Tile Batten is a fully treated softwood batten supplied in 4.8m lengths for pitched roofing work. Graded and selected specifically for use as tile and slate batten, it provides the fixing base for plain tiles, interlocking tiles, and natural and fibre cement slates across new roofs, re-roofs, and repair work on domestic and commercial buildings.

Premium grade is the distinction that matters on this product. Batten used for roofing is a structural component rather than a general timber, and premium graded stock is selected against strict limits on knots, wane, grain slope, and finger joints so that it carries the load of the tiles and the weight of anyone working on the roof without failing between rafters. The blue treatment colour identifies it clearly as treated batten on site and at inspection, and the preservative is driven in under pressure to protect against fungal decay and insect attack in the cold, damp, poorly ventilated space beneath a tiled roof, where replacement would mean stripping the covering.

At 25 x 38mm, this is the standard section for most plain tile and slate work at conventional rafter centres, and the 4.8m length reduces the number of joints across a roof slope. Battens should be fixed to every rafter they cross using galvanised or stainless nails, with joints staggered so that they do not fall on the same rafter in consecutive courses, and the gauge set out to suit the tile or slate being used and its required headlap.
