This box supplies 200 woodscrews at 4.0 x 50mm, a general-purpose screw with the length for light framing as well as joinery work. It suits fixing skirting and architrave into studwork, putting up shelving and heavy wall brackets, fixing boarding and sheet material to battens and joists, assembling frames, boxes, and garden furniture, light trellis and fence work, and general carpentry and repair jobs.

At 50mm the screw reaches well into the timber behind rather than just catching it. Fixing through an 18mm or 22mm board it still drives close to 30mm into the stud or batten, which is the depth a load-bearing fixing needs to hold without gradually working loose. The 4.0mm gauge sits between the finer 3.5mm and the heavier 5.0mm at the same length, giving more grip than the former without the splitting risk of the latter in smaller sections and finished joinery.

The screw is built around how it grips. A single thread cuts cleanly into the timber and compresses the fibres as it drives, giving good pull-out resistance, while the countersunk head pulls flush into the face of a board ready for filling and painting, and the reinforced drive recess holds the bit securely with less cam-out. Pilot holes are worth drilling in hardwoods and close to ends and edges, where driving straight in can split the timber.
