Product Description:
Our Trade Quality MDF is an 18mm engineered board manufactured to a consistent trade specification, suited to joinery, furniture, and structural interior work. It is used for cabinet and wardrobe carcassing, shelving and worktops, stair components and risers, door and bulkhead construction, fitted furniture, radiator covers and panelling, and general joinery across domestic and commercial projects.
At 18mm, this is the thickness most joinery is built from. It is rigid enough to span properly as a shelf without sagging under books or kitchen equipment, substantial enough to hold screws and fittings along its edge for carcass construction, and deep enough to take hinges, runners, and knock-down fittings — none of which work reliably in a thinner board. Where 12mm suits linings, backs, and panels, 18mm is the structural thickness of a cabinet or fitted unit.
Consistency is what trade grade buys you. With no grain direction, knots, or voids, every sheet behaves identically and every cut comes out the same, and a trade specification holds that from sheet to sheet. Edges machine cleanly enough to rout a moulded profile directly into the board, and the smooth closed face takes primer and paint with minimal preparation. At 2440 x 1220mm each sheet covers 2.98m², though at 18mm it is a heavy board and a two-person lift is sensible. Cut edges are absorbent and should be sealed before painting, and pilot holes are essential when screwing into the edge, where MDF splits readily.
