This box supplies 200 woodscrews at 5.0 x 30mm, a short screw in a heavy gauge for fixings that need grip rather than length. It suits fitting heavy hinges, gate ironmongery, brackets, and hasps, fixing bearers and cleats, attaching heavy-duty fittings to framing and furniture, fixing thicker sheet material to battens, and general repair work where a fixing has to hold firmly in limited depth.

The combination of a short length and a heavy gauge is what makes this size useful. Where there is only 30mm of timber to work with — fixing into the edge of a frame, through a bracket into a stud, or into the face of a rail — a 5.0mm screw puts far more thread into contact with the wood than a finer one, so the fixing holds properly despite the limited depth. It is also the better choice in chipboard and MDF, where thinner screws strip out under load.

The screw is built around how it grips. A single thread cuts cleanly into the timber and compresses the fibres as it drives, giving strong pull-out resistance for its length, while the countersunk head pulls flush into the surface of a bracket or board and the reinforced drive recess holds the bit securely with less cam-out. Pilot holes are worth drilling in hardwoods and close to ends and edges, as a 5.0mm screw splits thin or narrow timber readily if driven straight in.
