Our Screened Topsoil is a finely screened soil supplied in a bulk bag, suitable for lawn preparation and turf laying, raised beds and vegetable gardens, flower beds and borders, levelling uneven ground and filling low spots, and planting trees, shrubs, and hedging. It is used by gardeners, landscapers, builders, and developers alike.

The screening process is what makes it worth buying over ordinary soil. Passing the material through a screen removes the stones, root fragments, and lumps that make soil difficult to rake and level, leaving something fine and even that spreads easily and beds down properly. For turf in particular that matters a great deal, as new grass needs full contact with the soil beneath it to root, and a stony, lumpy bed leaves gaps where the turf dries out and fails. The resulting structure holds moisture and nutrients while still draining freely enough for roots to establish.

A few things worth knowing before ordering. The bags weigh approximately 600 to 700kg depending on how wet the soil is when filled, so weight varies with the weather. As a recycled product, small amounts of twig and stone may remain after screening. And because topsoil is natural and untreated, weed seeds can be present and will germinate in warm, wet conditions — unavoidable in any fertile soil, and not a fault, though worth anticipating if you are about to turf or seed.
