Longrake Plum Slate is a natural slate chipping in deep plum, purple, and blue-grey tones, supplied in a 20kg bag. The 40mm size suits borders and flower beds, rockeries, water features and pond edging, pot toppings, and decorative dressing around patios and planting.

Plum is the warmest of the slate colours, with purple and burgundy running through the blue-grey, and it is the one that shows the most colour variation from piece to piece. It works well against red and buff brick, terracotta pots, and planting in warm tones, where the cooler blue and charcoal slates can look stark, and it brings depth to beds without the brightness of a pale aggregate. The colour darkens markedly when wet, deepening the purple tones.

Slate lies differently from rounded gravel. The pieces are flat and plate-like, so they settle into overlapping layers that give good coverage for the volume used and knit into a close, even surface, and over a weed membrane those layers block light from the soil beneath to keep weed growth down while still letting water drain through. At 40mm the pieces are large and bold, better suited to wider beds and larger features than to containers. A depth of around 40mm to 50mm is usually sufficient. Slate is not suitable for driveways, as the flat pieces fracture under vehicle weight.
