Our 40mm Blue Slate Bulk Bag is a natural decorative aggregate supplied as flat, angular chippings in blue, grey, and plum tones. Suitable for garden borders, flower beds, rockeries, pathways, water features, pot toppings, and contemporary landscaping schemes, it is widely used across both domestic and commercial planting areas.

Slate looks quite different from rounded gravel once laid. The chippings are flat rather than rounded, so they settle into overlapping layers that give good coverage for the volume used and create a smooth, close-knit surface. The colour is the real draw: naturally deep blue-grey with plum and purple tones running through it, darkening noticeably when wet so the surface shifts in appearance through the day and after rain. Laid over a weed membrane, the overlapping layers block light from the soil below and suppress weed growth, while still allowing water to drain through freely.

Supplied in a bulk bag containing approximately 850kg, coverage will vary with the depth laid, though a depth of 40mm to 50mm is usually sufficient for decorative areas. Slate is naturally hard, frost-resistant, and holds its colour year after year with very little upkeep, needing no more than an occasional top-up as the surface settles. The angular edges make it less comfortable underfoot than rounded gravel, so it is best kept to beds, borders, and feature areas rather than paths that are walked frequently in bare feet.
