Our Class B Engineering Brick is a dense, high-strength clay brick chosen for its physical performance rather than its appearance. Measuring 215 x 100 x 65mm, it is suitable for use both above and below ground, and is commonly specified for foundations and footings, damp proof courses, retaining walls, manholes and inspection chambers, drainage work, plinths, and any brickwork facing heavy loading or constant exposure to moisture.

The Class B rating is a defined standard under BS EN 771-1 rather than a general description, which is why builders, specifiers, and building control look for it by name. It sets limits on both compressive strength and water absorption, with Class B bricks absorbing no more than 7% of their weight in water. That low absorption means the brick takes up very little moisture from wet ground or driving rain, resisting frost damage, salt attack, and the gradual breakdown that affects softer facing bricks in exposed positions. It is also what allows two courses of engineering brick to serve as a damp proof course at the base of a wall.

At 65mm high, the brick courses in with standard UK brickwork, so it can be laid below ground or at DPC level and continued upwards in facing brick without any adjustment to the coursing. Lay with a mortar suited to the exposure conditions, typically a stronger mix below ground and at DPC level than would be used for general facing work above.
