Product Description:

Our Sharp Sand is a coarse-grained building sand supplied in a bulk bag, also sold as grit sand, concreting sand, or coarse sand. It is used as a bedding layer for paving slabs and block paving, mixed with cement for concrete and floor screeds, for haunching and bedding edgings, and as a drainage and soil conditioning material across domestic and commercial projects.

Sharp sand is distinguished from building sand by its grain. The particles are coarser and angular rather than fine and rounded, so they lock together under compaction to form a firm, stable bed that holds paving in position and resists the settlement and rutting that occur on a soft bedding layer. That same angularity gives concrete and screed their strength, which is why sharp sand is specified for those mixes while soft building sand is kept for mortar.

Supplied in a bulk bag containing approximately 850kg, it works out considerably cheaper per tonne than handled bags and suits patios, driveways, and concreting work where a few 25kg bags would not go far. Having one consistent batch on site also keeps the bedding depth and the concrete mix even across the whole job. Store on firm, level ground and keep covered to stop the sand taking up rainwater, which makes it heavy to handle and harder to screed accurately.
