This gives mortar a smooth, plastic consistency that spreads easily on the trowel, holds its shape on the vertical face of a brick, and fills joints fully without voids. It is the correct sand for mortar work, whereas sharp sand, with its coarser, angular grains, is used for concrete, screeds, and paving bedding, where strength and drainage matter more than workability.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAs a general guide, a mortar for most brickwork uses around four to five parts building sand to one part cement, with lime or a plasticiser added to improve workability, though the correct mix depends on the brick type and exposure of the wall.
